Donald Craig Jeffries - July 29, 2011
Donald Craig Jeffries, 82, died Friday, July 29, 2011 at his home in Asheville, N.C. He was born May 7, 1929 in Wauneta, Neb., to the late Willis Bunyon and Irma Pence Jeffries.
Raised in Madrid, Neb., he graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He then entered the Army and served two years in communications headquarters of the counter-intelligence corps in Stuttgart, Germany.
After graduate courses in theater at the University of Washington, Seattle, he began an acting career in New York, with roles mainly in television and regional theaters, including four summers in Unto These Hills in Cherokee. Most of his career was spent in public television production in St. Louis, Cincinnati and Norfolk, Va. In 1974, he won a national Emmy for his contributions to the educational children’s television series “Inside/Out.”
Retiring to Asheville in 2007, he became active in nature photography groups, the Sierra Club and the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at UNCA.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Starnes Jeffries; daughters, Jill and husband James Dearborn of Marblehead, Mass. and Megan Jeffries of New York, N.Y; son, Craig and wife Rebecca of Virginia Beach, Va., two grandsons, Henry and Andrew Dearborn, of Marblehead; two granddaughters, Miciah and Madyson Jeffries of Virginia Beach; brother, William P. Jeffries, of Grand Island, Neb. and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service was held Aug. 6 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville.
