Vera Mae Curtis - August 14, 2011


Vera Mae Curtis was born on Nov. 21, 1918 on a farm near Elsie, Neb. She was the fifth of six children born to Walter and Ethel Miller Brodbeck. Vera attended school in Grant, Neb. and graduated from Perkins County High School in 1936.She celebrated her 70th class reunion in 2006.
Vera was married to Donald L. Curtis on Dec. 9, 1938. They lived on a farm near Madrid, Neb. until 1946 when they moved into Grant. Vera held different jobs but she especially enjoyed working in the Perkins County Clerk’s office for 23 years, retiring in 1990 as the deputy county clerk. Don died in 1996 after 58 years of marriage and Vera continued to maintain her home in Grant until 2005 when she moved to Simi Valley, Calif. to be closer to family.
Living in California, Vera appreciated being close to family and following the activities of her grandchildren. She was able to celebrate birthdays and holidays with those she loved. Vera volunteered at the Simi Valley Senior Center, attended an organized exercise group three times a week, played Bunco, and enjoyed taking bus trips to local area casinos. Vera established several friendships in California but always considered Grant her home. She always thought about her friends back in Grant and the lifestyle that she lived there.
Vera died peacefully on Aug. 14, 2011 with her family by her side. She had reached the age of 92.
Vera had been a 78-year member of the Grant First Congregational Church. She was an active member and served in several capacities at the church including being appointed as a Deaconess. The church always held a special place in Vera’s heart.
In addition to her parents and husband Vera was preceded in death by one sister, Wilmyrth Joosten and four brothers-Bill, Rudy, Glenn, and Raymond Brodbeck; a great-grandson, Jared and a nephew, Rigdon.
She is survived by those who loved her, one daughter, Donna Hart of Los Angeles; two sons, Lynn and his wife Marlis and Randy, all of Seattle; six grandchildren, Sean and wife Merrilee Hart, Dawn and husband William Sima, Denise and husband Gary Johnson, Jerry Curtis, Cory and wife Michelle Curtis, and Garrett Curtis; nine great-grandchildren, Ryan and Adam Johnson, Arielle, Conner and Sydney Sima, Trevor Hart, Kayla, Kyle and Ryan Curtis; other relatives and friends.
Vera was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a quiet, unassuming lady. She lived a peaceful, loving life and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Grant First Congregational Church with Pastor Larry Booth officiating.
Burial of cremains will be in the Grant Cemetery.
A reception for friends and family will be held at the church after the burial.
A memorial has been established to the church.
