W.P. "Bud" Jeffries - January 09, 2012

W. P. “Bud” Jeffries, 78, of Grand Island, Neb. a longtime Hall County Board member died Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at Tiffany Square Care Center, Grand Island after suffering a heart attack last year and battling cancer.
Mr. Jeffries was born June 24, 1933 in Wauneta, Neb. the son of Willis “Bunnie” and Irma (Pence) Jeffries. He grew up and received his education in Madrid, Neb. graduating with the class of 1951. He received his B.S. degree in Education from the University of Nebraska and later his Masters in Education from Michigan State. He entered the United States Army, Nov. 17, 1953, serving during the Korean Conflict and received his honorable discharge, Oct. 29, 1955.
He was united in marriage to Marilyn J. Keister, June 8, 1957 in Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grandville, Mich. where he was employed as a shop teacher at Rogers High School. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1964 where he was employed by Gold Bond National Gypsum Company and was also involved in the cattle business. In 1978 he became a salesman for Ideal Cement Company. He retired from sales in 2008 devoting more time to his farming and cattle operations.
Bud was politically active. He served on the Seedling Mile School District #74 for eight years and Grand Island Public Schools District #2 for eight years. He was elected to the Hall County Board of Supervisors in 1999, where he was Board Chairman more than once. He was also on the Kuester Lake Association Board serving as president for several years. He thoroughly enjoyed public service and improving Grand Island, and the Hall County community.
Bud’s greatest pride was his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and supported them in all their activities. He enjoyed playing cards, talking sports and politics with his friends at the Platt Duetsch. He also liked golfing with family and friends. Some of his favorite times were gatherings of his entire family around a large meal.
His professional and community activities include being a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a Korean Veteran, 1953-1955, member of the Chancellors Foundation at the University of Nebraska, trustee of Grand Island Education Foundation, the Annual Jeffries Family Academic Scholarship, Ashlar Lodge #33, AF & AM of Grand Island, Central Nebraska Shrine Club where he was the past president, lifetime member of GISH Booster Club, lifetime member of UNL Alumni Foundation, Husker Award Club, and a yearly contributor to UNL Athletic Foundation, Grand Island Saddle Club, Riverside Golf Club, Platt Duetsch Society, Stuhr Museum and the Nebraska Public Radio Foundation.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Bill Jeffries, Jim and Kelli Jeffries of Grand Island, a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Jeff Richardson of Grand Island, seven grandchildren: J.P. Jeffries, Johnna, Jack and Jay Jeffries, Megan, Allie and Katelyn Richardson and a special friend, Ellen Morledge of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bunnie and Irma Jeffries, his wife, Marilyn J., brother, Don Jeffries, and son, Jack Jeffries.
Memorial services were held Jan. 12, 2012 at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jay Vetter officiating.
Inurnment will be at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to Stuhr Museum and the “Jeffries Memorial Scholarship” with the Grand Island Education Foundation.
Apfel Funeral Home of Grand Island was in charge of arrangements.
