Janice (Lair) Sautbine - April 13, 2012
Grant, Neb., native Janice Kay Sautbine, 70, of Mesa, Ariz., died Friday, April 13, 2012 in Greenfield House Inpatient Unit/Hospice of Arizona in Mesa.
She was born Aug. 8, 1941 in Brandon, Neb., the daughter of Leon and Evelyn Lair.
After graduating from Perkins County High School in 1959, she entered nursing program at Scottsbluff College.
On Oct. 8, 1961 she married Larry Carpenter at Grant. The couple made their home in Douglas, Wyo., where she owned and operated The Koop Café. Later, the couple divorced.
In 1975 she and her two sons moved back to Nebraska, where she managed VFW in Grant and Skip’s Café in Alliance, Neb.
On Dec. 6, 1980 she married Jack Sautbine at Grant. The couple owned and operated The Grant Motel until 1987.
She and her husband then moved to Bullhead City, Ariz., where she continued to work in food service at Laughlin, Nev.
In 1995 she partnered with her son operating a sports bar and grill in Bullhead City, Ariz.
In 1997 she and her husband made a return to Grant as caregivers to her recently widowed and ill of health father.
In 2003, she moved to Apache Junction, AZ to be near her son and grandchildren. In 2008, due to her own failing health, she moved into Court Yard Towers assisted living in Mesa, Ariz.
Survivors include her father, Leon (Barney) Lair and special friend Marguerite Ott, both of Grant; a son, Marty Carpenter and wife Lyndee of Payson, Ariz.; a sister, Sandy Velte and special friend Dale Baker, both of Omaha; a brother, Galen Lair and wife Doris of Ogallala; three grandchildren, Nicole Carpenter of Peetz, Colo.; Carly and Coby Carpenter of Payson: cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Lair; her husband, Jack Sautbine; a son, Troy Carpenter; and a brother, Donald Lair.
A private family memorial is to be held at a later date in Payson.
Angels Cremation and Burial of Mesa was in charge of arrangements.
