Katherine "Katy" Carlson - May 30, 2012

Katherine “Katy” Carlson was born on June 29, 1932 at Ogallala, Neb. She was the daughter of Ernest and Mary Ford Lewis. Katy grew up in Grant, Neb. where she attended school, graduating from Perkins County High School in 1950. After high school she attended Nebraska Wesleyan for two years where she was affiliated with the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority which she continued to support throughout her life.
Katy met Jim Carlson who had moved to Grant to help his brother in the bakery in 1953 and they were married on April 3, 1954 in Grant. They moved to Milford, Neb. where Jim attended technical school and later to Denver. In 1957 they moved back to Grant where they formed Carlson Electric. After Jim died in 1990, Katy continued to maintain her home and help run Carlson Electric with her son, Mike, until her failing health forced her retirement.
Katy had been diagnosed with a malignancy but she continued to live her life as normal as possible until she was transferred to the Perkins County Community Hospital and the Golden Ours Convalescent Home earlier this month. She died at Golden Ours on Wednesday morning, May 30, 2012. She had reached the age of 79.
Katy was always actively involved in her community and her church. She supported the United Methodist Church on the local, district, and state level for many years. She was part of the church choir and served as the director for many years. She sang for many funerals and weddings. She taught and attended Sunday School and was active with Bible study at church as late as this spring.
She was actively involved with the Perkins County Republican Committee and had served as the director as well as many other offices. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Grant Tree Board, and was active for many years in organizing the Grant blood drive. In addition to helping with the family business she worked for several years with Perkins County Health Services as a lab and x-ray technician, a nursing assistant at Golden Ours, and the Colglazier Medical Clinic.
In addition to her husband and parents, Katy was preceded in death by three half-brothers, Edgar, Merle, and Berle Lewis.
She is survived by those she dearly loved, two sons, Mike and wife Alyson of Grant and Joe and wife Krista of Wilbur, Neb.; five grandchildren, Ryan Schneider, Evan, Emily, Elisabeth, and Elliot Carlson; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held June 2 at the Grant United Methodist Church with Rev. Rich Savage officiating.
Burial was in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
