Joseph A. Olds - August 20, 2012

Joseph A. Olds was born on Sept. 11, 1933 at Washington, Iowa. He was the youngest of four sons born to F. Marion and Wilma Lease Olds. He grew up in Davenport, Iowa where he attended school, graduating from Davenport High School in 1951. Joe was inducted into the United States Army and served during the Korean War until his discharge in 1955. He returned to Davenport where he began working.
Joe was married to Carolee Duncan on Jan. 11, 1959 at Corning, Iowa. Joe worked as a journeyman linesman for an electrical company and traveled in Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Colorado. He later enrolled at Oklahoma St. University and graduated in 1967 with an electrical engineering degree. After graduation he began working for the C.H. Guernsey Company which served in an advisory capacity to Midwest Electric in Grant, Neb. Joe and Carolee liked Grant and moved to Grant in the early 1970s. In 1975 he became affiliated with YW Electric based in Akron, Colo. and advised for them until he retired in 1994.
Joe had been dealing with congestive heart failure and had developed pulmonary fibrosis this summer. He died at the Perkins County Community Hospital in Grant on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012. He had reached the age of 78.
Joe was a member of the Association of Certified Engineers, the American Legion, and had served on the Grant City Council.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Carolee in 2008.
He is survived by his three brothers, Bill and wife Jeanne Olds of Peoria, Ariz., Bob and wife June Olds of Davenport and Charles and wife Violet Olds of Eldridge, Iowa; his dog, Meadow, who was his steady companion; other relatives and friends including special friends Lillie Justice and her son Mike of Fredericksburg, Va.
His body was cremated. Committal of cremains was held on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the Grant Fairview Cemetery with John Long officiating.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
