Lela Tjaden - October 02, 2012
Lela Tjaden was born on Feb. 25, 1914 at Madrid, Neb. She was the third of six children born to Edgar and Pearl Mickels Price. Lela grew up in the Madrid community and graduated from Madrid High School in 1931.
Lela was married to Frank F. Tjaden on March 19, 1935 in Holyoke, Colo. Two sons were born to this union. Frank and Lela made their first farm home south of Elsie, Neb and in 1940 they moved to their home east of Madrid. In the mid-1970s, Frank and Lela retired from the farm and moved into Madrid.
Frank died in 1998 and Lela moved to the Westview Retirement in Grant in 2000. She was later admitted to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant where she lived for nine years. She died at Golden Ours on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 at the age of 98.
Lela was a lifetime member of the Madrid United Methodist Church where she belonged to the W.S.C.S. and taught Sunday School. While living on the farm, Frank and Lela enjoyed playing cards with their friends. She was a skilled worker in putting up wallpaper and interior painting.
Lela was recognized as the “Good Neighbor” at Madrid Day activities in 1996. Lela enjoyed sewing and sewed many of her own clothes as well as clothes for her boys. She liked to crochet and made an afghan for each of her grandchildren. She enjoyed following her grandchildren in their activities.
In addition to her parents and husband, Lela was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Price, and three sisters, Alice and Jessie Allen, and Virginia Phillips.
She is survived by her two sons, Roger and his wife Bernita (Beetz) of rural Madrid and Jerry and his wife Peggy of Norfolk, Neb; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Myrna Lee of Hay Springs, Neb.; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Oct. 5, 2012 at the Madrid United Methodist Church with Pastor Linda Battello officiating.
Burial was in the Madrid Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
