John W. Spelts - November 11, 2012
John W. Spelts, age 78, of North Platte, Neb. passed away Nov. 11, 2012 at Cozad, Neb. He was born April 1, 1934 to John and Lucille (Gumm) Spelts.
He attended Madrid High School in Madrid, Neb. and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
John was united in marriage to Verna Joy Fister on May 28, 1958 at Ogallala, Neb.
They moved to North Platte in 1960 and he was employed by the U.P.P.R as a fireman/oiler.
He was a member of the V.F.W and past member of the Knights of Columbus. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking and playing horseshoes.
Survivors include his wife, Verna of North Platte, his son, Randy and wife Harriet Spelts of North Platte; his daughter, Julie and husband Kai Nylander of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; brothers, Dan and wife Jean Ann Spelts of Arlington, Texas and Doug and wife Georgia Spelts of Cambria, Calif.; grandchildren, Hilary, Michael and Molly Spelts and Ashley Nylander.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lou Otterstein and Lola Johnson.
Memorial services were held Nov. 19 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.
Inurnment was at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery with military honors graveside.
Cremation was chosen. A memorial has been established in his memory.
