Dr. John Joseph McGahan - April 11, 2013


Dr. John Joseph McGahan of Billings, Mont. was born at Elsie, Neb., to Mathew and Lena (Lindauer) McGahan on Nov. 10, 1924, and passed away March 17, 2013 in Seattle, Wash.
John graduated from Elsie High School in 1942 and then attended Creighton University in Omaha. He went through pre-med and medical school in five years at Creighton University Medical School during the war in a Navy program, graduating in 1947. He interned at Creighton Memorial St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha, then he completed a four-year general surgery residency at St. Louis University Medical School. John was the first person from Perkins County to become a physician.
On Aug. 28, 1947 John married the love of his life, Roma Helen Nagengast of Dalton, Neb. and three children were born of this union. Roma passed away in 2002 after 56 years of marriage. John centered his life around his love of God and his family.
He is survived by his children, Dr. John P. and wife Vicki McGahan of Sacramento, Calif., Dr. Margaret and husband Thomas Hutchison of Seattle and James and wife Grace McGahan of Alamose, Colo.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sister Kathryn and husband Charles Bolton of Dorchester, Neb. and sister-in-law Carol McGahan of Grand Island, Neb.; many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife Roma; parents Matt and Lena McGahan; brothers, Matthew and wife Marian, Bernard (Barney) and Francis and sister Isabelle McLaughlin.
Funeral services were held March 23, 2013 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Billings.
Burial was at Mountview Cemetery.
