Jan Van Boening - April 25, 2009

Jan VanBoening was born on December 18, 1940 at Denver, Colo. She was one of five children born to William and Florence “Pat” Feagans Applegate. Jan grew up in Denver where she attended school, graduating from Denver South High School in 1958.
She lived in Denver until 1968 when she was married to Robert Fitzgerald. They moved to Venango, Neb. where they started raising their four children. Bob died in 1974.
Jan was married to Gene VanBoening in 1977 and they made their home a the VanBoening farm southeast of Venango. Gene died in 1993.
Jan worked as a mail carrier out of the Venango Post Office for 10 years and was later appointed as the postmaster until her retirement in 1998. Because of failing health, Jan moved to New Mexico a few years ago to be closer to her family. She died Saturday afternoon, April 25, 2009 at her daughter’s home in Los Lunas, N.M. She had reached the age of 68.
Jan was an active member of the Grant Evangelical Free Church and was involved in the Awana program. Jan had served on the Perkins County Health Services board and also sat on the Westview Retirement Administrative Board.
She had always committed herself to helping others. Jan was a beacon of light to all who knew her. She spent a life surrounded by love, laughter and finding joy in all things. Her unwavering faith in the Lord brought her comfort, peace and assurance.
In addition to her parents and her two husbands, Jan was preceded in death by her in-laws, Bob and Gladys Fitzgerald, whom she stayed close to.
She is survived by three daughters, Cat and husband John Roberts of Los Lunas; Sally Fitzgerald of Boise, Idaho and Shannon and husband Steve Broekman of San Francisco, Calif.; a son, Rick and wife Angie Fitzgerald of Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren, Robin, Forrest, Robert, Megan and Alyson; one great-grandchild, Suriah; three brothers, Ray, Roy and John Applegate, and a sister, Judy Wallen; other relatives and friends whose lives she touched.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Grant Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Russ Gaar officiating.
Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the VanBoening farm on Thursday from 3-8 p.m.
Visitation will be held on Thursday at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home who is in charge of arrangements.
