Edith Hartwell - June 14, 2003

Edith Irene Hartwell was born on July 19, 1923 at Beatrice, Neb. She was the fourth of five children born to Otto and Edith Ebner Hrdlicka. Edith grew up in Beatrice where she attended school through the 10th grade and then moved to Lincoln, Neb.
Edith was married to Willard Shattuck in Lincoln on July 1, 1940. They moved to an acreage south of Seward, Neb. where they operated a large garden and trucked the produce to different farmers’ markets. Edith also worked at a bakery, Gessons Cleaners and as a nurses aide at the Seward Memorial Hospital for seven years.
At the age of 46 Edith went back to school and in 1970 she graduated as an LPN. She continued to work as an LPN. in Lincoln and in Seward for the next 12 years.
Willard died in 1979 and eventually Edith began a mail correspondence through the Capper’s Weekly magazine with Dwight Hartwell of rural Venango, Neb.
Dwight and Edith were married in Seward on Aug. 27, 1983. They lived on the Hartwell farm in northwest Perkins County where Dwight was active until he had heart surgery in 1994. They retired in 1998 and moved into Grant. Edith continued to maintain their home in Grant after Dwight moved to the nursing home in 2005. Dwight died in 2011.
She maintained a big garden and flowers at home until 2010 when she moved to Westview Retirement Community in Grant. Edith moved to Park Ridge Assisted Living in January 2014 and because of failing health she had been moved to Golden Ours Convalescent Home where she died early Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, 2014 at the age of 90.
She had previously attended the Ogallala Church of Christ and was presently a member of the Grant First Congregational Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, country music, and playing cards. She was an avid collector and she enjoyed her dolls, music boxes, and miniature tea sets.
In addition to her two husbands, Willard and Dwight, she was preceded by three brothers, George, Glen, LeRoy; two half-brothers, Harvey, and Thomas; one sister, Irma Baumfalk; three half-sisters, Rose Gould, Judy Kish and Ruby Crosby.
Edith is survived by a half-sister, Ruth Ramsey of Beatrice; nieces and nephews and special family friends, Charles and wife Dalene Toovey, Loren and wife Sharon Toovey, Janice Halberg and Pat Toovey; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 at the Grant Congregational Church with Pastor Larry Booth officiating.
Burial was in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
