Bernadine Hastings - March 27, 2014
Bernadine Hastings was born on March 18, 1921 at Grainton, Neb. She was the youngest of two children born to Virgil and Alice Skrivan Hilty. Bernadine grew up in Grainton but attended high school in Wallace, Neb. where she graduated in 1942.
Bernadine was married to Marven Hastings on Dec. 20, 1943 in Grant, Neb. They made their home on a farm southeast of Elsie, Neb. where she lived the rest of her life and raised six children on the farm. Marven died in 1992 but Bernadine was able to stay on the farm with the help of her children.
Bernadine had celebrated her birthday last week with family and had visited with some of her children on Thursday night. She had an apparent fatal heart attack later that evening, March 20, 2014, two days after her 93rd birthday.
Bernadine was the typical farm wife–supporting her husband and taking care of her children. She was a Cub Scout leader when her sons were young. She enjoyed her garden and canned a lot of produce. She was an excellent cook and for many years remembered her children and their extended families with birthday cakes. She was an avid card player and always enjoyed a game of pitch or rummy at family gatherings. She had a special bond with her dog “Toby” and was saddened by his death last year.
In addition to her parents and husband, Bernadine was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and Marvin Hilty.
She is survived by three daughters, Marvena and husband Bob Boettger-Rongisch, Carol Lungrin and Janet and husband Terry Dunlap all of North Platte, Neb.; three sons, Dennis and wife Darlene of Grant, Victor and wife Taffy of rural Ogallala, Neb. and Bill of North Platte; 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Duane and wife Mickey Hilty and Roland and wife Eileen Hilty and a sister, Marion Wilfong all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held March 25, 2014 at the Elsie United Methodist Church with Pastor Linda Battello officiating.
Burial was in the Elsie Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
