Mary Smith - June 13, 2009Mary C. Smith of Wallace, Neb. passed away on June 13, 2009 at Linden Court in North Platte, Neb. She was 87 years old.
Mary was born March 15, 1922 to William and Mae (Sullivan) Cohen of Wallace. She graduated from Wallace High School in 1939.
She was united in marriage to Warren D. Smith on Feb. 22, 1941. They were blessed with eight children, 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Mary was a wonderful mother and devout Catholic woman.
Her mother, Mae, died when Mary was only 14 years old. She had three older brothers still at home and five younger siblings that she helped raise. Her strength and care for others allowed her to raise two families in her lifetime.
Mary was a very active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wallace. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Altar Society, Wallace Community Club, Jolly Farmerette Club, numerous school organizations and was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 213.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Warren, an infant daughter, Teresa Ellen and a son, Duane William, one sister and four brothers.
Mary is survived by a sister, Catherine Coder of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, Gerald and wife Carol Cohen of North Platte; two daughters, Kathleen and husband Red Miller of Denver and Jane and husband Wade Jessen of Norfolk, Neb.; four sons, Larry of Wallace and Jim and wife Cathy of Wallace; John and wife Vicky of North Platte and Darrell and wife Frances of North Platte; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
A Rosary service was held Tuesday, June 16 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wallace. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, June 17 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wallace with Father Mark Pfeiffer officiating.
Burial was in the Wallace Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Carpenter Memorial Chapel of North Platte and Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant were in charge of arrangements.
