Robert Holmes - August 05, 2009

Robert Maurice Holmes, 88, of Kearney, Neb., died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009 at Mother Hull Home in Kearney.       
Robert was born June 22, 1921 at Taylor, Neb., to Arthur Lyle and Lucy (Cross) Holmes. On Oct. 10, 1948 he married Phyllis Hennings.
Robert enlisted in the Navy and was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. 
He was employed in Sargent, Neb., at the Mid-State Co-op for approximately 18 years. He then moved to the Hi Plains Co-op in Elsie/Wallace for about 11 years.
He moved to Grant, Neb., after retirement, then to Kearney in 2007.  He was a resident of Northridge Retirement Home then Mother Hull Nursing Home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in 2006; two sons, Donald and Ronald; one grandson; his parents; three brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include four sons, Dennis and wife, Deena of Kearney, Gale Holmes of Denver, Robert L. “Bert” Holmes and and William “Bill” and wife Brenda Holmes all of Norton, Kan., daughter; Gloria and husband George Louch of Mitchell, Neb.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brothers, Charlie Holmes of Hershey, Neb., and twin brother, Hank Holmes of Salt Lake City, Utah; and sisters, Edith Dilsaver of Wichita, Kan., and Helen Hoon of Boulder, Colo.
Services were held Monday, Aug. 10 at O’Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home in Kearney with Rev. Gary Main officiating.
  Interment was at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.  The Navy Honor Guard and the North Platte Veterans Group provided military honors. Memorials will be established in his name.
O’Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney was in charge of arrangements.
