Charley Salsman - December 15, 2008

Charley Salsman was born on Aug. 7, 1929 at the Salsman ranch in Chase County southwest of Grant, Neb. He was the youngest of three children born to James I. and Elizabeth May Cowherd Salsman. Charley grew up on the ranch, attending rural school. He attended Perkins County High School in Grant, graduating in 1947.
Charley was married to Doralyn Kuskie on May 23, 1948 at the Methodist Church in Grant. They made their home on the ranch until 1954 when they moved to their present farm home four miles southwest of Grant.
Although Charley was involved in agriculture, his lifelong love was raising cattle. He enjoyed the hard work it required and it provided a way for him to stay in top physical condition.
Charley was a track athlete in high school and was a state champion long jumper. He later enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in high school sports in Grant.
He enjoyed running, and in his later years he competed in the senior games with success and was an active participant in the torch run across Nebraska, running as recently as the summer of 2006.
Charley had developed physical problems in the past few years and had moved to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in March of this year. Charley died at Golden Ours on Monday night, Dec. 15, 2008. He had reached the age of 79.
In addition to his parents, Charley was preceded in death by two daughters, infant, Rita Ann Salsman and Marcia Hunt who died in 2007.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Doralyn; one son, Dick and wife Cindy of rural Grant and one daughter, Anita and husband Rex Burge of rural Grant; four grandsons, Kyle and wife Nancy Salsman, Kody Salsman, Chris and Tim Burge; one great-grandson, Carson Salsman; one brother, Jim and wife Joyce of Grant and one sister, Evalyn Kirkegaard of Denver, Colo.; son-in-law, Dale Hunt of Albuquerque, N.M.; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Fri. Dec. 19, 2008 at the Grant United Methodist Church with Pastor Sally Ruggia-Haden officiating.
Music was provided by Carolyn Harms and Lori McCloskey.
Casket bearers were Kyle Salsman, Kody Salsman, Steve Barkley, Chris Burge, Tim Burge and Doug Sexson.
Burial was in the Grant Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
