Meet the artist Friday, May 5, 5-7

May 2023 artist at Meadowlark Gallery is Lea McComas. Meet with Lea and see her world-famous ‘Thread Painted Portraits’ show, Friday, May 5 from 5-7.

Lea’s award-winning portraits and genre quilts have been exhibited around the world including Geneva, Vienna, Johannesburg, New York, California, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska.

She has been featured in numerous publications and online platforms such as Quilting Arts TV & Magazine and TheQuiltShow.com

“While I have studied the techniques and approaches of classical portrait and genre painters, I choose to work in textiles.” McComas said. “Fabrics bear witness to all of our life experiences from the blanket that wraps a newborn, to the uniforms of our sports teams, and the suit we don for that important presentation.”

With a life-long interest in fiber, Lea began sewing at age six. She earned an M.A. in Education, and was a public school educator for 40 years, including nine years serving military families stationed overseas.

While living abroad, Lea immersed herself in the local cultures, learning the arts and traditions of the people with whom she lived. This included studying carpet weaving in Turkey, and fabric dying in Japan.
