During a special meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9,  Perkins County Schools Board were updated by Superintendent Phillip Picquet on additional days students will complete to make up for several snow days this year.

Picquet said that because of the six days taken this year due of the snowy weather, students are approaching being in the threshold of not meeting required hours.

“PCS is usually well above the minimum required instructional hours of 1,032 for elementary and 1,080 for secondary students, and typically our school district can miss six to several days of school and still meet the requirements,” he said, but not this year.

“In a proactive step, and anticipating that more days of school could be missed on account of weather, we will add hours back to a couple of school days and also add two full days of school,” he said.

The changes to the calendar are as follows:

• Friday, Feb. 17, 24 will have a 3:30 p.m. dismissal;

• Wednesday March 8 will have a 3:30 p.m dismissal;

• Tuesday and Wednesday, May 16 and 17 will be full days of school for students;

• Wednesday, May 17, which is the last day of school, will be a 1:30 p.m. dismissal.

Those with questions about the change in days for the school year are asked to call and talk to Picquet.

Kara Hagan Hired

During its Feb. 9 meeting, the board also approved the hiring of Kara Hagan who will teach 5th-6th grade Language Arts. Hagan will fill a position that will be left open by Megan Dormann who will move to 5th/6th Science. Amanda Wood, who was teaching science, will move to the 7-12 building to teach junior high science, Picquet said.
