On Monday, April 17, the Perkins County School Board was busy accepting resignations and extending job contracts to employees of the district. One of the individuals who found herself on both sides of the board’s discussion was PC School Board Member Angela Gloy. Gloy submitted her resignation from the board Monday to accept a teaching position the same evening with Perkins County as its Middle School Social Studies teacher.

Resignation Accepted

The first order of business for the board Monday was to accept, with appreciation, Gloy’s resignation from the board. After, which, they dealt with the process of filling the vacancy.

After having served four years on the board, Gloy was elected to a second term in November 2022, which will run through December 31, 2026. Gloy chose to step down from the board to accept the open social studies position being left open when Tara Schwanebeck moves to the Jr./Sr. High in Perkins County to teach math.

Gloy was an American History major at Gettysburg College, has her masters and PhD in Ag Economics, and also has a secondary teaching certificate in social studies. Before moving to Nebraska with her family, she had been involved with teaching in both middle school and post-secondary institutions. Gloy said she is excited to step back into the classroom.

“I am really excited about this opportunity,” she said. “My hope is that I can bring some of my experiences to the classroom.”

Filling The Board Position

The board has 45 days to fill the vacant board seat with three different options given to them by their attorney. These options included filling it with the next highest vote-getter during the 2022 General Election. Those on the ballot for the three open PC School Board positions were Gloy, Chris Fryzek and Cameron Sis. Gloy received the most votes with 810, followed by Sis with 775 and Fryzek with 580. Also running as a write-in candidate for one of the three open positions was Don Softley, who garnered a 161 votes.

The board had the option of filling Gloy’s empty seat with Softley, appointing someone else, or opening the position up to applications from the public, which ultimately they chose to do.

High public participation in the board’s recent process to fill three administrator’s positions at the school, along with wanting to involve the public in the process of filling the board position, played into the board’s ultimate decision to open the application process for the position.

Applications for the position are available at Perkins County High School, and will be accepted until Monday, May 1 at 4 p.m. That same day the board will meet to review the applicants and proceed from there, ultimately making their decision known at the May 15th meeting.

 Other Resignations/Hires

The board also accepted resignations from the following during the evening: Angie Dickey, Title 1; Nicole Long, elementary art, TeamMates program coordinator, assessment coordinator, high school internship coordinator, ADVISER coordinator (Data Steward and reporting system to Nebraska Dept. of Education); Tanner Collins, 7-12 PE, Sr. High football/wrestling coaches; and Sophia Jaeger, 7-12 business teacher and Jr. High volleyball coach.

Those submitting resignations will be doing the following: Dickey has accepted a position with ESU 15, Long has accepted a position with ESU 16, Collins has accepted a teaching position with Hayes Center Public Schools and Jaeger will teach and coach at South Platte, Superintendent Phillip Picquet said.

Contracts Extended

The board extended nearly as many contracts as they accepted resignations during the evening. These are the following:

• Tonya Mosel, who currently serves as the school nurse at the elementary school, will continue in that position as well as add 5th/6th grade teaching;

• Julie Ferguson, long- term sub from Chase County, Ferguson will teach Jr./Sr. high business.

• Brendan Geier, who is in his ninth year of teaching P.E. at Sutherland, along with serving as its head football coach, was offered the same position at PCS to fill Collins’s position.

• Angela Gloy will serve as 5th and 6th grade social studies.

Other Business

Other business for the board on Monday night included the following:

• Picquet announced that the school was given $7,000 from the United Methodist Church in Madrid, which the school will use to purchase a steam table, and other needed items for the kitchen.

• The school will be going away from streaming its events on YouTube, switching over to Hudl. The move was made because of the ease of use of Hudl and the ability for the school to earn advertising dollars from the Hudl platform, according to the school’s Technology Coordinator Renee Seiler.

• Picquet gave an overview of the school’s fleet of vehicles, including age and condition. The board continues to look at the upkeep of the fleet and the needs of the district concerning transportation.

• Picquet also gave the board an update on the buildings and grounds committee meeting concerning updates to the elementary school.

Picquet said the committee met with Perkins County teachers and a representative from the ESU to discuss various space needs they have. The committee also considered current infrastructure and other needs of the district. Nothing firm was decided, but the district would like to move forward on elementary infrastructure projects by next year, Picquet said.

Next Meeting

The Perkins County School Board will have its next regular meeting on Monday, May 15 at 7 p.m.
