Ogallala’s Comfort Inn destroyed in blaze

The Grant Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) joined the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department (OVFD) and four other departments to battle the blaze that claimed the Comfort Inn on Dec. 9.

After receiving the call around 3 a.m. from 110 Pony Express Lane, Ogallala immediately requested mutual aid from Paxton, Keystone/Lemoyne and Brule. They paged for Grant and Big Springs further into the incident. GVFD received the page around 4:30 a.m.

According to OVFD fire chief Dell Simmerman, the fire was already deep-seated upon arrival, and had extended into a second story attic space. Nineteen occupants were evacuated by business staff, Ogallala Police Department officers and first responding firefighters. Heavy equipment from Scott England and Keith County Roads was called in to assist with overhaul due to structural instability.
