The Perkins County track teams claimed two individual champions in five events at Friday’s SPVA track championships in Hershey.

Mason McGreer was the conference champion in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs.

“This was the first time Mason has done three open events and he passed that test with flying colors. This helps figure some things out for the district meet,” Plainsmen Head Coach Shayne Hite said.

Kailee Potts swept both hurdle titles. Ava Reese placed second in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal best.

“Ava has been working hard all season. I’ve been working with her on just focusing on her and not on others in the race and she’s getting that figured out,” Hite said.

Kenna Busick placed second in the 800 meter run. Charis Goodell was third in the 1600 meter run, Libby Cole was third in the 400 and Meredith Gloy took fourth in the 3200.

The girls 1600 meter relay, Busick, Katie Cook, Carlie Homan and Cole, and the 3200 meter relay, Busick, Gloy, Goodell and Cole, were both second.

The Plainsmen went 3-4-5 in the boys 200 meter dash. Ryder Potts placed third, Blake Garner was fourth and Ethan Sihm took fifth.

In the high jump, Dawson Tjaden claimed third place and Rylee Schrotberger was fifth.

Going in with a goal of team finishes in the top three, the girls team rose to the challenge, finishing third behind Chase County and North Platte St. Pat’s. Both teams are defending state champions.

The boys team finished just short, taking fourth place behind Chase County, St. Pat’s and Hershey.

“Being short a couple of boys hurt us there,” Hite said, adding the boys finished about where coaches thought they would be in most events.

Up next

The Best of the Midwest was Tuesday in Sutherland.

Hite said the Plainsmen were planning on taking 18 individuals and would have to wait and see how many actually competed. The meet allows eight athletes in each event and only runs finals.

“The boys 4x1 is sitting ninth but we will take them and see if someone scratches out,” Hite said.

The Dundy County Stratton Twilight will be Friday in Benkelman. Participating schools are Chase County, DCS, Maywood-Hayes Center, Hershey, and Wauneta-Palisade, plus Kansas schools Atwood-Rawlins County and Cheylin.

Events will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Next Thursday PCS will host eight teams for the C9 district meet in Grant.
