The Perkins County Plainsmen Boys’ Golf Team struggled with a windy Wednesday during their showing at Class D Boys’ Golf Championship last week in North Platte at Lake Maloney Golf Course. Despite the wind, Sophomore Zaybreon Hansen took fourth individually, and the team took seventh out of 15 participating teams.

“The team did really well overall,” Head Coach Kelly Smith, saying the boys posted some good scores. “Wednesday had tougher conditions with the wind, and the greens were faster than they were on Tuesday.”

Hansen came in fourth with a combined two-day score of 153, although he trailed in second and third at times during some of the tournament.

The wind was a factor for Hansen on Wednesday. On hole 11, what looked like a good putt slipped out because of the wind. Another interesting highlight from hole 11 was player Carter Milton actually hitting and killing a dove during one of his turns.

Taking first individually during the day was Gage Burns, a senior from Creighton with a combined score of 151, second was Quinton Heineman from Pender with a combined score of 152 and third was Layton Gralheer of Pender with a two-day score of 154.

Other two-day scores for the Perkins County team members were as follows: Will Long, 181; Storm Peterson, 183; Jet Peterson, 190; and Eli Busick, 210.

Pender as a team took the top position with a total score of 641, with Overton coming in second with a score of 652. Perkins County came in seventh with a score of 708.

Overall, Smith was happy with the tournament and the season.

“The team had a really good finish,” he said.
