Plainsmen waiting on warmer weather

For the second week in a row, Perkins County’s track team competed against the weather as much as their opponents.

The Plainsmen’s April 4 meet at Dundy County Stratton was brutal and Friday’s meet at Sutherland was only slightly better.

“We are waiting for some good weather to really see where some of our athletes are in regard to being in shape. We still have several puzzle pieces to try and fit together before SPVA and District meets,” Head Coach Shayne Hite said.

Kailee Potts took the Plainsmen’s only individual first place finish. Potts was first in the 300 meter hurdles.

Libby Cole finished third in the high jump, Kenna Busick was third in the 800 meter run, Charis Goodell was fifth in the 1600 and Meredith Gloy was fifth in the 3200.

Perkins County’s girls 3200 meter relay was second and its 400 meter relay was sixth.

Mason McGreer was second in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. The 1600 was one of the best races of the day. McGreer finished a step behind Wallace’s Trey Robertson after a sprint down the straight. McGreer also ran a season best trying to track down Robertson in the 3200.

Casey Hanson was third in both the 400 meter dash and long jump.

Blake Garner was second in the triple jump and fifth in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

The boys’ 400 meter relay finished first by 0.1 over Arthur County and the 3200 meter relay was second.

The boys team also finished third in the team race behind Chase County and North Platte St. Pat’s.

It wasn’t the day Hite had hoped for.

“Things didn’t go quite as well as I had hoped. In some areas, we improved but took a step backward in others,” Hite said.

Hite liked the way his team stayed mentally strong at the cold Dundy County Stratton Invite, but felt they  let up at Sutherland.

“I thought we were in the right direction with our mental toughness but Friday proved that to be not so true,” he added.

Up next

The Plainsmen were in Imperial Tuesday for the Chase County Invite with Ogallala, Garden County, Hershey and Dundy County Stratton.

While weather was forecasted to be warm Tuesday, Saturday is expected to be chilly and breezy once more for the Mike Troxel Invitational at Hershey.

The meet will give Perkins County a look at the track where the SPVA meet will be held next week, April 28, and five of the seven teams scheduled to be there, Chase County, St. Pat’s, Sutherland and Hershey. Also attending will be Saturday Arthur County.

Track season is quickly winding down.

The McCook JV Invite will be Monday.

Following SPVA, the Best of the Midwest will be May 2 in Sutherland and the Dundy County Stratton Twilight will be May 5.

The C9 district track meet is less than a month away, May 11, on the Plainmen’s home turf. Attending the district meet will be Bayard, Bridgeport, Chase County, Gordon-Rushville, Hemingford, Kimball, Mitchell and Morrill.

The state track meet is just a month away. Classes C and D will be May 19-20.
