Track season underway with preseason tri

Looking back to Feb. 27, the official start of spring practices, it maybe seemed hard to believe the foot of snow would be cleared off the track. Even though piles of snow still lingered, the athletes enjoyed a beautiful day for the Perkins County Preseason Triangular last Thursday.

While the weather was great just like it was at last year’s triangular, PCS Head Coach Shayne Hite is hopeful this year doesn’t repeat the rest of the 2022 season.

“Hopefully it’s not like last season when it was great for this one and poor for the rest. My goal is to get all three of our home meets in,” Hite said. PCS will host the E. Lee Todd Invite this week and districts May 11.

The Plainsmen had 45 boys’ personal records and 19 for the girls.

Hite said that’s typical for the first meet.

Although many were younger athletes, there were juniors and seniors who PR’d on their way to top eight finishes against Chase County and Potter-Dix.

Junior Blake Garner was second in the 100 meter dash and senior Ethan Sihm was fifth, while senior Carlie Homan was third in the girls’ 100. All had PRs. Sihm also had a PR for his second place finish in the 200.

Sophomore Mason McGreer swept the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.

Senior Meredith Gloy placed first in the 3200 meter run and junior  Kailee Potts was first in the 100 meter hurdles.

Senior Casey Hanson won the 400 meter run and Garner claimed the triple jump win.

Ryder Potts, Hanson, Sihm and Garner combined to win the 400 meter relay.

Hanson was second in the long jump and K. Potts was runner up in the 300-meter hurdles. Sophomores Charis Goodell and Kenna Busick took second in the 1600 meter run and 800 meter run, respectively.

Looking over the results, Hite said he’s excited to see where some of his Plainsmen get to in their events this season.

“Hopefully some are open to trying some different events though because we are weak (both boys and girls) in some events and would like to see some more bodies in them. Girls will be more difficult with only 19 out,” Hite said, adding he’s counting on a lot of young athletes to develop and help out.

With the snow still on the track at the beginning of practice, Hite said the teams are a week behind.

“We scooped snow for a week before we were able to get some quality running in,“ he added.

The E. Lee Todd Invite was scheduled for Friday, but after checking out the forecast, PCS has moved the meet up one day to Thursday.

The Plainsmen will be short handed with around 17 athletes at the Nebraska State FFA Convention.

Hite said PCS will do its best without them and those athletes will catch up when they get back from Lincoln.

On Tuesday, Perkins County will head to Benkelman for the Dundy County Stratton Invite.
