Grant Packing honored as February spotlight

Grant Packing had the honor of presenting at the February Chamber meeting as the business spotlight.

Justin Coats, owner of Grant Packing celebrated 20 years at the plant in January. 

“The building was built by Tatum in 1965. There were a couple owners in between him and my grandfather. My Grandparents, Carl and Lola Otte, purchased the business in 2000 from Maynard Hanson. I started my employment with him in January of 2001. My parents purchased the business in 2005. I continued my employment with them until purchasing the business from them in 2010,” Coats said. 

At Grant Packing, services provided include custom slaughtering and processing of beef, pork, buffalo, lamb and wild game. 

“We also produce a full line of retail products available to the general public. We grind our own ground beef, cut our steaks, make jerky, snack sticks and many other sausages. We cure and smoke our bacons and hams in house.  A majority of our business is on the custom processing side,” Coats explained. 

Current ownership includes Justin Coats and his parents Rolly and Virginia Coats.

At Grant Packing, the target customers include people who raise their own livestock that will have the need to have them processed. 

They also sell to the general public, and also offer sides of beef and pork to the general public as well.

There are currently seven employees working for Coats at the plant.

The ongoing goal for Grant Packing Justin said, is “to adapt to our customers needs as their needs change. From packaging in different quantities to different cuts to fit needs.”

Current changes have been to update equipment as processing equipment technology improves. 

They are also looking ahead at equipment to increase productivity and quality. The added more cold storage recently for frozen products to accommodate customers time frames to pick up and deliver meats.
