PC Vet Hospital March Chamber Spotlight

Perkins County Veterinary Hospital had the honor of being awarded the Perkins County Chamber Business Spotlight of the month for March.

Owner Dr. Shannon Jensen opened the business in 2000 after completing her veterinary degree at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. She will celebrate her eightieth year in business this summer.

When Jensen first set out at CSU she planned to treat both large and small animals.

“So that meant I took twice as many classes in vet school so I could learn [both],” she said.

However, since opening her doors, Jensen has treated far more small animals and has made that her niche.

“I think the last cow I saw was about ten years ago,” Jensen said.

Based on that shift in her business, Jensen has invested in equipment that allows her to give the best possible care of small animals including an ultrasound machine, cold laser therapy, digital radiographs, in-house blood work and a private crematory.

The business is comprised of eight employees including Jensen.

“That’s often a shock to a lot of people that don’t realize we have so many out there. But we have boarding facilities, grooming facilities, doggy day care, anything you can think of that has to do with veterinary care we try to accommodate,” Jensen explained.

Jensen aims to make her clinic an all-inclusive clinic people will drive to and get the same care they would expect in the city. According to Jensen she serves pet owners as far and wide as Holyoke and north of the lake.

Her future plans for the business are to simply keep growing.

“When I first started, some of you may remember coming to my actual house and coming onto the dining room table to have an exam. We’ve come a long way from there,” she laughed.

She recalls the days when five appointments in a day was exciting. She now currently averages 45 appointments per week and approximately 16 surgeries.

In September, the clinic invested in all new, state-of-the-art blood work equipment.

She hopes to remodel her pharmacy area and work on some of the original structure of the building as well as expand the small dog boarding facilities.

Unique to the boarding facilities is a fenced-in, one acre area that allows animals to run and play while staying at the facility. Staff members are with the animals as early as 7 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m. Jensen also offers Sunday pickup.
