Less Than 5 Shoe Store will open again Dec. 18
Shayne Hite’s sixth grade class opened up their Less Than 5 Shoe Store in the elementary school gym Wednesday, Nov. 13.
The shoe store offers dress shoes, sport shoes or snow boots all for less than five dollars.
Hite attended a workshop last year that discussed students doing passion projects. He thought it would be fun and educational to do one as a class this year, so he shared the information with his students.
“We talked about how the coat drive works each year, and they came up with the idea of a shoe store,” Hite said.
Before the store opening, they had over 100 pairs of boots and shoes. With the continued donations from the community, they have been able to keep over 100 pairs in stock.
The sixth graders have sold or given away more than 20 pairs of shoes since their project began.
This year’s sixth graders hope to pass the store on to next year’s sixth graders so they may continue to grow and help the community.
In the future they may consider expanding what is offered, such as socks or shoe strings.
The store is expanding to an online shop as well. According to Hite, the website is close to being fully up and running, and they are currently entering pictures and updating prices and sizes.
Less Than 5 Shoe Store will open again on Dec. 18 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the elementary gym. In the meantime, the website can be found at https://sites.google.com/a/perkinscountyschools.org/mr-hite-s-website/ho....
They are always accepting donations of any shoes in good condition. The only shoes not accepted are open-toed shoes and flip-flops.
