Plainsmen take 63-36 win over Creek Valley in holiday tournament

Perkins County’s Plainsmen boys picked up their second win of the season Dec. 27, defeating Creek Valley 63-36 in the holiday tournament in Grant.

The tournament was scheduled for two days. However, a snowy forecast forced cancellation of play on Saturday.

The Plainsmen got off to a slow start, giving up a 7-0 lead to Creek Valley in the first four minutes of the game.

Coach Shawn Cole got his boys back into the game with an aggressive trapping defense that changed the tempo for the rest of the quarter.

Starting with three-point play by Triston Hite at the 3:37 mark, the Plainsmen ran off 12 unanswered points for a 12-7 lead.

Sophomore Hayden Foster added a pair of buckets from the lane in the final 38 seconds, scoring seven of the Plainsmen’s last nine points. That gave his team a 16-9 lead going into the second.

Neither team could get points on the board but Hite got eight of the team’s 10 points in the second to preserve a 26-20 halftime lead.

The defense turned it up a notch again in the third, holding Creek Valley to two free throws, a deuce and a trey.

The offense kicked in as well, putting up 20 points, including 10 from Hunter Garner, to give the Plainsmen a 19-point lead going into the fourth.

The Plainsmen added another 17 while holding Creek Valley to nine, cruising to the 63-36 win.

Garner led the scoring with 16 with Foster finishing with 14 and Hite in double figures with 10.

The Plainsmen teams return to the floor Friday, Jan. 3 at Ogallala for varsity-only contests beginning with the girls at 6 p.m.
