April is Fair Housing Month

The Southwest Nebraska Community Betterment Corporation wants all Nebraskans to understand their fair housing rights.

The Fair Housing Act makes discrimination in the sale, rental and advertising in housing unlawful, and assures our citizens are treated equally. It prohibits housing discrimination based upon race, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, disability, marital status or familial status.

Unfortunately, discrimination continues to occur and prevents many Nebraskans from having the chance to live in safe, affordable, quality housing.

A lack of understanding about fair housing rights and how the laws can be enforced could be a barrier to fair housing.

Through education and awareness, families and individuals can recognize discrimination and take steps towards fair treatment. Anyone who feels that they have been discriminated against can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD is the federal agency designated to enforce the Fair Housing Act.

Until discrimination is recognized and addressed, many Nebraskans will continue to lack safe, affordable, quality housing.

It is our right and responsibility to work together so that all Nebraskans have the right to housing free from discrimination.

For more information on fair housing rights please contact the SWNCBC Fair Housing Representative, Amy Thelander at 308-352-4338.
