Ballfield project delayed as Grant City Council weighs long-term costs

Plans for a proposed restroom and storage facility at the city ballfields will remain on hold for at least two more months after the Grant City Council voted to table the project while members consider long-term financial and maintenance obligations.
The discussion consumed much of the council’s meeting as Jana Turner presented a proposal for a Phase 1 improvement project that would add restroom facilities and storage space at the ballfields.
Council members expressed support for improving the city’s recreational facilities but questioned how construction, ongoing maintenance and future operating expenses would be funded. Members also discussed whether volunteer labor and community fundraising could offset project costs before committing city funds.
Rather than move forward immediately, the council voted to postpone further discussion until its Oct. 27 meeting, allowing additional time to evaluate the proposal and its long-term impact on the city’s budget.
In other business, the council approved a conditional use permit allowing construction of a covered patio at 705 Lincoln Ave.
Council members also authorized the abatement of a property at 835 Sherman Ave. as part of the city’s efforts to address nuisance properties.
The council devoted another portion of the meeting to budget planning for the 2026-27 fiscal year, reviewing capital improvement priorities that included airport improvements, utility system maintenance and cemetery equipment needs.
Members approved the proposed Hastings Memorial Library budget of just under $100k before scheduling a budget workshop for 7 p.m. Aug. 20 to continue discussions on the city’s overall spending plan.
The council also approved Resolution No. 26-07-01, adopting a citywide safety policy and program designed to comply with recommendations from the city’s insurance provider and strengthen workplace safety procedures. The meeting concluded with approval of bills and claims totaling $27,716. More on this meeting in a future issue of the Tribune.
