County adopts new emergency alert system

Perkins County residents can now sign up for a new emergency alert system.

Perkins County Sheriff and Emergency Manager Jim Brueggeman said the county is excited to announce they have adopted a new alert system to notify citizens during emergency situations.

The new system—Rave Alert—is now operational and available to all residents as a free service by the county.

Rave Alert keeps residents and travelers informed on potentially hazardous situations involving weather, traffic and other emergencies.

Rave Alert is trusted by thousands of institutions including state and local authorities, business and educational institutions. Rave Alert sends millions of messages daily and performs flawlessly in critical situations such as severe weather.

“Rave Alert enables authorities to notify the community in real time,” Brueggemansaid. “This service allows for critical communication with the public and provides individuals with the information needed to stay safe or take precautions during hazardous or emergency situations.”

Signup free

County residents and those who travel to Perkins County can sign up for free. The web link appears at the end of this story.

Brueggeman said people can choose to receive the emergency alerts via email, text or voice message. They can also identify when and how they are alerted and communicated with before, during, and after emergencies.

Signup for Rave Alert can also be completed by installing the Smart911 app on their smart phones.

The Smart911 app provides enhanced functionality by sending targeted alerts based on the user’s location. Smart911 app users also receive the highest priority National Weather Service alerts including tornado warnings, flash flood warnings, and severe thunderstorm warnings based on their real-time location.

The app can be downloaded at the Apple Store or Google Play, or by texting Smart911 to 67283.

Brueggeman said the notifications will improve safety in the county and help inform residents of potentially lifesaving actions they may need to take in an emergency.

“The information sent out by Rave Alert through emergency notifications allows both residents and first responders to be better informed in an emergency situation,” he added.

When authorities have information about a situation, such as storm or emergency, Rave Alert can more effectively provide information and appropriate assistance to the public, he said.

“We encourage all members of our community and their families’ sign up for Rave Alert in order to be prepared should an emergency occur.”

Residents can sign up and input their information and notification preferences at https://www.smart911.com/smart911/ref/reg.action?pa=perkinscoso or in the Smart911 app.
