Critical need for blood donations

More than 550 blood drives have been forced to cancel due to winter weather in the first three weeks of January. Such cancellations have caused more than 16,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

In addition to winter weather causing cancellations, widespread flu has also caused a decline in donations.

Currently, donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they come in.

The American Red Cross is asking for help to ensure shelves are stocked with lifesaving blood that patients depend on when disasters and weather strike and for everyday survival.

Perkins County residents can help with the need during the upcoming Elsie-Madrid blood drive Feb. 9, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Elsie Methodist Church fellowship hall.

To schedule a donation appointment contact Michele at 308-228-2318 or online at www.redcrossblood.org

Donators are encouraged to bring their Rapid Pass to save time.
