Cross country biker stops in Elsie

Tom Thwing of New Castle, Colorado, stopped by for a cool drink and break at the Elsie C-store on Saturday afternoon, June 10.

Thwing is on a bicycle trip from New Castle to Warwick, Rhode Island. He will be riding over 4,800 miles in memory of Brianna Oas Strand, who passed away May 7 from cystic fibrosis. Strand was the daughter of a colleague of Thwing.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes the usually thin, clear mucus in the lungs to become thick and sticky, causing obstruction to breathing. It causes infection and early death. Strand passed away at the age of 28.

Thwing said that to know Strand was to taste a little of heaven on earth. She smiled and interacted with friends, loved horses and her pets, and was a junior rodeo queen when she was 15.

Strand continued on to college after high school and graduated with a double major in animal science and zoology. She then married her true love, Nicholas Strand.
