Leading the 2017 Perkins County Fair as the grand marshals on Saturday will be David and Kathleen Deaver of Grant.

Dave was born and raised on a farm west of Grant as the youngest of five boys.

Born at home before the hospital was built, Dave said, “Dr. E. E. Colglazier’s house is where all the babies were born back then if they weren’t born at home.”

Kathy, originally from Ogallala, met Dave when her sister married Dave’s brother.

“I thought it was such a good idea,” Kathy laughed. “I always tell the kids I chased him till I caught him.”

In his younger years, Dave worked as a police officer for the City of Grant for 12 years back when Grant had a police department, achieving the rank of captain. When the department dissolved in 1979, he went to work for the sheriff’s office, serving as sheriff for several inconsecutive terms. When not serving as sheriff, he worked for Frenchman Valley Coop.
