Enjoy an Irish milkshake, support a good cause

Westview Retirement Community will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Shake fundraiser on Wednesday, Mar. 17, St. Patrick’s Day.

The fundraiser is to replace heating units in some residents’ rooms at the facility.

“Some of the heating units are from when our original building was put up, which has been almost 27 years,” said Amber Hilton of Westview. “So, of course, things get old and they break. We are wanting to raise money to replace some of those.”

They had already started working on replacing some of the units over the last year, Hilton added.

According to Hilton, a little over $11,000 is their fundraising goal, but not all of those funds will be coming from Westview’s shake sales.

They hope to raise $5,000, which would be matched by the Perkins County Retirement Association. Then, if they have raised that money by June, the Perkins County Community Foundation Fund will kick in the final thousand.

This is the first fundraiser of its kind from Westview, and Hilton said she hopes people, including residents, participate.

The shakes will resemble Shamrock Shakes®, made famous by McDonalds, which are mint flavored milkshakes. Westview staff will be making the shakes on site using vanilla ice cream, mint flavoring and green food coloring.

The fundraiser will go from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Those interested in a St. Patrick’s Day shake are asked to place an order five to 10 minutes before arriving at Westview, and they will bring the shakes out to cars in the parking lot.

Hilton said they are asking for $5 donations for the shakes, and any extra that people feel like donating will go right toward the heating unit replacements.

“I used to do activities when I worked over at the nursing home, and we always did ice cream socials and things like that, so I just threw a twist on it,” Hilton said. “There’s not really much you can do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, so I figured ice cream is always good.”

Those interested in a shake this St. Patrick’s Day can call 308-352-2133 to place their order.
