Filing deadline passes, write-in efforts abound

Filing deadline for the May Primary Election has long passed but that hasn’t dampened interest in serving on the Perkins County Schools board of education.

The race didn’t even appear on the Primary ballot because only three candidates filed for the three open seats.

They included incumbent Jayson Bishop, Edward Dunn and Larry Pankonin.

Shortly after the Primary, Dunn filed the necessary paperwork to withdraw his name from going forward the General Election in November.

Since then, three new write-in candidates have emerged, each filing petitions with County Clerk Rita Long so their name can appear on the November ballot.

Each submitted petitions that contained the signatures of at least 188 registered voters in the county.

Long explained the 188-signature threshold represents 20% of the votes the highest vote-getter received in the last election, which was 939.

Janet Lagler was the first to complete a petition. She was followed by Richard Thurin and then Aaron Uehling.

Long said three more individuals have picked up petitions for the school board. September 1 is the deadline for submitting those petitions.

In the Grant City Council race, Cody Lee also filed the paperwork to remove his name from the November ballot.

Non-incumbent deadline

The deadline for non-incumbents to file for village boards, educational service units and public power districts was Aug. 3.

Elsie’s village board drew five candidates, including one write-in whose name will appear on the ballot. They include incumbent Victor Perez, Derrick Warner, Tami Cook, Julie Robertson and Amanda Condon.

The are only three candidates for the three open seats on the Madrid village board. They include George Adams, Kristy Ogg and Tony Ross.

Incumbent Tom Tines was the only filer for the Venango village board. There are two seats up for election.

After the Sept. 1 deadline, Long said people can still mount a write-in campaign but their name will not appear on the ballot. The name will have to be written in and the box checked for the vote to count.
