The Grant Lions Club and the Grant Tree Board are collaborating on a weekend of “cleaning and greening,” Friday-Saturday, April 28-29, in celebration of Arbor Day, and encourage the public to participate.

Tree Planting

The tree board will provide a tree to be planted on Friday, April 28 (Arbor Day) at the site of the new junior high building. Third graders, who have learned an Arbor Day song, will accompany the tree board in the planting.

Pinnacle Bank and the Lions Club will be distributing seedling trees at the elementary school. Third graders will receive Black Hills spruce seedlings from Pinnacle Bank and fourth graders will receive evergreen seedlings from the Lions.

Students are invited to have an adult take a photo of them in their yard with their newly planted tree. Photos may be submitted to the Grant Tribune-Sentinel at www.granttribune.com for consideration for publication.

Saturday in the Park

The turnaround area west of the band shell will be the focus of Saturday’s activities. Formerly an Eagle Scout project, the area has become neglected, and will be renovated by members of the Lions Club and any community members who wish to participate.

The old shrubs and trees as well as the lava rock will be removed, and if there is time, new shrubs planted, according to Gloria Patrick, project chair for the Lions Club.

“The more groups that can help, the better,” Patrick said.

The city is considering another use for the removed lava rock, said Dana Harris, city superintendent.

The project came about when the Lions Club members were brainstorming ideas for service projects in the community.

Lions Club International is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and has established three tiers of objectives to award clubs accomplishing certain goals. The renovation of the park turnaround will make the Grant club eligible for Tier 2 status.

If there are plenty of volunteers Saturday, a cleanup of the rest of the park and downtown will be added to the activities.

City-wide Cleanup

Residents and business owners are encouraged to clean up their homes, yards and places of business throughout the weekend.

The city will ensure that trash receptacles at the fairgrounds are emptied for the weekend. The dumpsters there are intended for large trash items that won’t fit into regular alley dumpsters. They are for private, residential use only.

Cardboard, tin, aluminum, plastic and newspaper can be taken to the recycling bins on the intersection of First and Logan St. Metal items are also accepted, and can be placed in the designated dumpster. The city asks that freon be removed from appliances before disposal. No tires are accepted at either location.
