Grant City Council approves insurance renewal, garbage truck engine bid
The Grant City Council approved employee health insurance renewals, accepted annual fair parade duties and moved forward with plans to seek bids for repairs to the city’s garbage truck during its regular meeting April 28.
Mayor Lisa Schmitt called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in open session. Council members Kimberly Bishop, Andrea Brueggeman and Samuel Sims were present, while council member Tierney Petersen was absent. Also attending were City Superintendent Derek Brueggeman, City Clerk/Treasurer Jessie Faber and City Attorney Tawna Holmstedt.
Council members unanimously approved both the meeting agenda and minutes from the April 14 meeting.
During communications, City Superintendent Derek Brueggeman updated the council on several upcoming community activities and meetings. Arbor Day activities organized by the Tree Board were rescheduled for May 5, while the board’s park cleanup event was set for May 2. The Cemetery Board’s annual Memorial Day cleanup event was scheduled for May 16. Brueggeman also informed the council he had been in contact with Midwest Electric regarding companies that could conduct an electric rate study. He said a future agenda item would likely address a proposed electric rate increase resolution while additional research continues regarding a potential rate study.
Under new business, the council formally acknowledged receipt of the City of Grant Community Redevelopment Authority’s annual Tax Increment Financing report.
Council members also approved Resolution No. 26-04-01, officially accepting fair parade duties as outlined under Nebraska statute. The resolution passed unanimously following a motion by Bishop and a second by Sims.
The council later approved employee health insurance renewals effective July 1, selecting the Blue Cross Blue Shield Light H.S.A. Option 2 plan. The city will also continue its current Health Savings Account contribution rates of $50 per month for single plans and $100 per month for family plans, distributed in semi-monthly installments.
Discussion also focused on the city’s garbage truck and the potential cost and timeline involved in replacing the vehicle. Rather than replacing the entire truck immediately, the council voted unanimously to seek bids for replacement of the truck’s engine.
The council approved bills and claims totaling $26,955.19, including expenses related to employee benefits, retirement contributions, engineering services, taxes and overtime wages.
Mayor Schmitt adjourned the meeting at 7:18 p.m.
