Grant Medical Clinic receives ultrasound machine

Patients at Grant Medical Clinic are benefitting from a new state-of-the art ultrasound machine.

The $35,000 machine was purchased by the Perkins County Health Services Foundation and given to the clinic.

Dr. Matt Bryd, Perkins County Health Services chief of staff, said they will use the machine primarily to date pregnancies in the first trimester.

He said most maternity insurance only allows one prenatal ultrasound, which typically covers the anatomy screening done halfway through pregnancy.

There is no extra charge to have an ultrasound in the clinic. This allows it to be used as needed without the added expense of scheduling an ultrasound in the diagnostic imaging department of the hospital, such as if there’s trouble finding a baby’s heartbeat or a mom is in labor and the baby may be breach.

The previous ultrasound machine used in the clinic was dated and did not have the many features of the new machine.

The machine can be used for much more than pregnancies, including checking gallbladders, diagnosing internal bleeding and guiding needles into veins. The unit is also portable, so it can be used in the emergency and operating rooms or wherever needed.
