GVFD calls mutual aid for cat rescue

Grant Volunteer Fire Department called in Ogallala VFD on Sunday evening, June 23, to assist in the rescue of a kitten from a tree 12 miles northwest of Grant.

GVFD Assistant Fire Chief Fred Reichert said the kitten had been stuck in the tree for several hours after being chased up by a dog.

Too young to come down on its own, the kitten’s owner, Shirley Stickley, called the fire department for help.

“Thank God for them,” said Stickley. “How many people would come out and rescue a poor little kitten that was up in a tree and couldn’t get down?”

Three members of the Grant fire department responded. Reichert said their extension ladders reach around 20 feet, but the kitten was stuck up to 35-40 feet in the tree.

They called in OVFD to respond with their ladder truck, who had the kitten rescued safely minutes after arriving.

Stickley then took the kitten back to mama.
