Hunter seriously injured in gun accident

Brett Rogers, 46, of Ogallala, suffered serious injury in a gun accident Saturday.

According to Sheriff Jim Brueggeman, Rogers was deer hunting when the accident occurred. He was accompanied by Lisa Resor of Grant.

The sheriff said Rogers had stopped his vehicle and was getting out with his rifle when the rifle discharged.

The bullet struck Rogers in the back side of his left knee, causing serious damage to the knee and leg area.

Brueggeman said Resor used a t-shirt to apply a tourniquet above the wound and called for help.

When the 911 call came into Perkins County dispatch, she was uncertain exactly where they were.

The enhanced 911 system picked up the cell tower where the call first came from and then began pinpointing their location to a trail road northeast of Grant, near Rds. 330 and 766.

The Perkins County Ambulance, Grant Volunteer Fire Department and Regional West paramedics from Ogallala were dispatched to the scene.

Brueggeman said the situation become more complicated when responders learned that Rogers had COVID-19.

From that point, all responders had to follow Covid protocols to protect themselves.

The life flight helicopter from Holyoke, Colorado picked up Rogers at the scene and transported him directly to a Denver hospital for surgery.

Since it was a hunting accident, Brueggeman said the Game & Parks was notified for any followup they may need to do.
