Keep approach to mailbox clear

Perkins County Postmaster Laurie Fagullar would like to remind all rural customers to keep the approaches to their mailboxes clear this winter.

“It is the customer’s responsibility to be sure that the approach to their mailbox is clear of snow, ice, vehicles and other objects. This will permit the carrier to drive up to your mailbox to deposit and collect mail without leaving the vehicle or to reverse to get to the box or away from the box,” she said.

Fagullar noted mail carriers can easily skid into the mailbox or ditch when delivering mail in icy conditions.

“We rely on the County and State to remove snow from our roadways to make it easier to get the mail to you. They can’t always get all of the snow away from the boxes, so customers should be aware of this and be sure to have it cleared for your carrier. The County is required to maintain all roads that are on the mail route to make travel easier for our carriers,” she said.

If the situation becomes unsafe for the carrier, mail may be suspended until the snow and ice clear and it becomes safe for carriers to approach mailboxes.

If anyone has any questions regarding policies on delivery, please contact Fagullar, at 308-352-4409.
