Makayla DaMoude refers to the Elsie and Madrid Legion Posts as “her guys.” DaMoude first played “Taps” as a fifth grader for her great grandpa’s funeral. Her dad, Russ DaMoude, who works at Regier Equipment in Madrid, later learned Elsie needed a Taps player. She first played for the Elsie Post 11 years ago and has been doing it ever since. The following year, she played for Madrid as well and has added Fort McPherson to the annual list. She returned from Omaha this year to play. With COVID-19, Fort McPherson did not hold ceremonies but she still traveled there Monday for a solo performance of the final call. She belongs to Taps for Veterans and Bugles Across America and has played for funerals in Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas.
