A snowplow drops sand onto Highway 61 north of Grant to help prevent icy roads.

March to be welcomed by continuing cold

Last year, March was greeted with temps in the 60s. In 2017, while the first two days of the month were in the 40s, the next three were in the 60s and 70s. A high of 77 was seen on Feb. 21, 2017.

March will be greeted quite differently this year with snow showers expected this weekend, and lows expected to hit below zero Saturday through Tuesday.

With temps barely above freezing since Valentine’s Day, most people are more than ready for spring.

Perkins County Schools canceled school on Feb. 11, 15 and 22, with a late start on Feb. 20 due to snow and icy conditions. While extra days are built into the schedule if necessary, Superintendent Phillip Picquet said they have not hit that point yet.

Unfortunately, the forecast doesn’t show an increase in temperatures anytime soon.

PCS students’ spring break on March 7-10 won’t be welcomed by much spring. Temps are unlikely to grow above freezing and snow showers are expected that weekend.

Remember to stay safe in the cold and be smart when choosing to travel. Traveling in the snow and ice can be a major challenge for even the most experienced motorists.

According to the Department of Transportation, there are approximately 1.2 million weather-related vehicle crashes every year, leading to, on average, nearly 6,000 fatalities and over 445,000 injuries.
