McGuire sets state fishing record

Scott McGuire of Grant was one of three to set a new state fishing record this past summer.

The Nebraska Game and Parks certified McGuire’s rod-and-reel record when he caught a 4-pound, 14-ounce tiger trout on a fly.

He caught the 24-inch-long trout while fishing the North Platte River below Lake Ogallala in April.

McGuire, a lifetime outdoorsman, said he doubts the record will hold for long.

Game and Parks released about 15,700 tiger trout into Lake Ogallala in July 2015, the first batch in the state.

In 2016, the state record was set at just 15 ounces. The records are proceeding quickly, with McGuire breaking the 3-pound, 15-ounce record set in August 2018 by Don Musser of Tryon in the Sutherland Supply Canal near Paxton. The previous record was held only for four months by Nicholas Batt of Elkhorn at 3 pounds 1 ounce, also in the North Platte River below Lake Ogallala.
