Dorothy Long Meyer, 100, receives her medal from Donna Mayer for completing the 1-mile fun run on the Fourth of July in Grant.

Meyer’s miles keeping her moving at age 100

Dorothy Long Meyer of Grant, age 100 1/2, walks one mile every day.

A resident of Westview Retirement Community, Meyer has her route all measured out.

“If I walk five laps up and back all three halls that’s a mile,” she said.

They had it measured when they were laying new carpet. She walks three laps in the morning and two laps in the afternoon.

A farm girl from Illinois, Meyer started her love for walking young.

“My brother and I loved to go out and walk the hills and in through the pastures and go pick blackberries and raspberries.”

As an adult, she had two neighbors who walked two to three miles with her every morning.

When she first moved to Westview in Grant around 20 years ago, she would walk to the high school track where she would walk two miles.

She’s had two falls over the past couple years that have put her walks on hold for a time, but as soon as she’s able she’s back at it.

On July 4, Meyer completed the 1-mile fun run in Grant at 100 years old. She walks in the race annually, participating in at least 10.
