Nebraska Game and Parks activities planned

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is hosting several activities  this month.

All activities are free of charge unless otherwise noted.

Learn about Butterflies Day

Learn about Butterflies Day will be on March 11 at 1 p.m. at the Lake McConaughy Visitor/Water Interpretive Center. 

Kids and their parents are invited out to the lake for an early celebration of National Learn about Butterflies Day.  There will be a short video and presentation followed by butterfly crafts and snacks.

Bird Walks

Bird walks will take place at Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area on Saturday, March 17 and 31 at 8 a.m. 

The park naturalist will lead participants on a guided bird walk. Binoculars, bird guides and checklists will be provided. Participants should wear appropriate walking shoes and bring plenty of water. 

The meeting place will be at the Lake Ogallala Hike/Bike Trail located on the east side of the lake inside the modern campground. 

State park entry permits are required on all vehicles entering the area.  

Plant a Flower Day

Activities for Plant a Flower Day will be held at the Lake McConaughy Visitor/Water Interpretive Center on March 18 at 1 p.m. 

Family and friends are invited out to the visitor center for an afternoon of planting flowers from seed. There will be plant containers for kids to decorate and flower seeds to plant and take home.  

Also, kids will be planting seeds that will later be transplanted into larger pots for a program in May. 

Acrylic painting

Acrylic painting will take place on March 24 from 2-4:30 p.m. at the Lake McConaughy Visitor/Water Interpretive Center.  

Painters can follow guided instructions on an original painting or create their own masterpiece. Canvas, brushes, paint and refreshments will all be provided for a fee. Registration is required. 

Walk in the Park Day

A trail walk and star party at Ash Hollow State Historical Park will take place March 30 at 6 p.m. Bring family and friends out for a walk along the lake trail with the park naturalist, in honor of National Take a Walk in the Park Day. Feel free to bring camera, water and walking shoes.  

There will be binoculars available. Meet at the picnic area. After the walk, participants will enjoy gazing at the night sky through a telescope.  

A local astronomer will be present to guide in the viewing. Star gazing will be on the hill near the visitor center. Activities will be weather dependent. State Park Entry Permit is required on all vehicles entering the area.
