New filings for Elsie, Madrid village boards

Dunn withdraws name for school board

Two new candidates have filed for the Elsie village board, along with one new candidate for the Madrid village board as filing deadlines approach.

County Clerk/Election Commissioner Rita Long said three seats are up for election on both the Elsie and Madrid boards, while two Venango village board seats are up in the Nov. 3 General Election.

Derrick Warner and Tami Cook have both filed for the Elsie board.

Incumbents of the Elsie board include Justin Hutchensen, Victor Perez and Cheryl Giesselmann. None of the three have filed for re-election as of Monday.

Incumbent George Adams has filed for re-election to the Madrid board. There have been no other filings thus far.

Other incumbents on the Madrid board include Lisa Oldaker and Nick Ross.

No one has filed for the Venango village board to this point. The incumbents include Tom Tines and Anita Perez.

Filing deadlines

Incumbents on the three boards have until Wednesday, July 15 to file for re-election.

Non-incumbents have until Monday, Aug. 3 to file.

In Nebraska, no primary elections are held for the boards of village trustees, educational service units, public power districts grossing less than 40 million dollars; reclamation districts, county weed districts; and township officers.

In Perkins County that only includes village boards and ESU boards. The ESU districts representing Perkins County are not up for election this cycle.

Dunn withdraws

Edward Dunn has withdrawn his name for election to the Perkins County Schools board of education.

Dunn, who serves as the city superintendent, said it became evident to him, with all the coronavirus issues both the city and school have faced, that he couldn’t do justice to both the city council and the school board.

Dunn was among just three candidates filing for the three openings on the board. The other candidates include incumbent Jayson Bishop and Larry Pankonin.

Since there were only three candidates for three seats, the race did not appear on the Primary ballot. All three were automatically nominated forward to the General Election.

Long said Dunn completed the necessary paperwork to decline the nomination to the General Election. As a result, his name will not appear on the November ballot.

Long said since there are three open seats on the board, three write-in lines will appear on the ballot.

However, anyone interested in seeking the seat via a write-in campaign must first complete a write-in affidavit with her office.

The final deadline to file an affidavit is Oct. 23.

Write-in votes for people without that affidavit will not be counted, she noted.

If no write-in affidavits are filed, Long said the school board will appoint someone to fill the open seat.
