A pancake feed fundraiser, organized by Jen Harger of Madrid, was held on Thursday, Oct. 30, to help offset medical expenses for the family of 14-year-old Ben Case whose foot was injured when it got caught under a tire on a trailer he was riding on during this years homecoming parade at Perkins County Schools. Approximately 150 people attended the pancake feed.
A silent auction was also held during the evening, with more than 64 items donated by businesses and citizens, Harger said. Ben was at the event for about an hour visiting with those in attendance. Ben’s mom Marcia Case said the time there really helped to uplift his spirits, and she thanks everyone who came out for the event or who has helped their family in any way.
“We are extremely grateful for everyone’s generosity and prayers since Ben’s injury happened, but the turn out for the pancake feed has made me really thankful and appreciative that we live in such an amazing community like Perkins County,” Marcia said. “We’re lucky to call this place home.”
Ben, his mom and his dad, Preston, spent a month at Children’s Hospital in Denver where Ben underwent several surgeries to save his foot. Marcia said Ben has been at home now for about two weeks, and is adjusting to the new normal of being in a wheelchair and on crutches as his foot continues to heal and he will eventually go back to school. Also, starting this week Ben will go back and forth to Denver every two weeks for follow up appointments, and will have at least one more surgery for ankle reconstruction and fusing in either December or January, Marcia said.
