In 2025 alone, the Perkins County Animal Shelter (PCAS) adopted out 104 dogs. While each dog adopted was cherished by the staff and had its own amazing story of rescue, one with a particularly rewarding story was a Keeshond named R2D2.

R2D2 was brought into the shelter after she got her leg caught in a fence causing a complicated compound fracture. According to the shelter, amputation was the fastest, and best way to get her healed quickly. The owner ultimately surrendered her to the shelter, and the search for an owner for the three-legged R2D2 began.

Like all of the dogs looking for homes at PCAS, R2D2 was listed on the online pet adoption portal called PetFinder. It was there a Manhattan, New York attorney came across R2D2 and fell in love.

According to PCAS, the attorney and her husband don’t plan on having children, but instead, they seek out animals to adopt, and that is what they decided do with R2D2.

After deciding to adopt R2D2, plans were made to transport the Keeshond to New York by using the airline RetrievAir. RetrieveAir is a private airline dedicated to pet owners and to helping shelters transport pets from across the United States, it was even featured on the TV show Shark Tank.

Just after the first of the year, the staff from PCAS met RetrievAir staff at a hotel near the Centennial, Colorado airport, and R2D2 was on her way to her new home.

“It’s great that those who adopted R2D2 came across our little Nebraska shelter,” said Jess Bollinger, PCAS vet tech. “It was exciting because once they were convinced they were adopting R2D2, they actually chose one of everything on our Amazon wish list to send. We got boxes and boxes of donations from them. This is how the shelter stays afloat, generosity of animal lovers.”

Other Adoptions

PCAS staff say that looking back on 2025, they are overwhelmed with gratitude and pride for what the year brought.

“We just give thanks to our incredible supporters, adopters, volunteers, and partners, for helping us to adopt 104 dogs to loving homes,” Bollinger said.

According to Bollinger, while many of the shelter dogs found homes right in Nebraska and Colorado, there were many who found homes in several other states, including R2D2 in New York.

“This past year our reach went far beyond our borders. Our pups packed their bags and headed to new lives in New York, Florida, New Jersey, Texas, Utah, Nevada, and Georgia—proof that love for these dogs knows no distance,” Bollinger said.

The PCAS staff is excited to adopt more dogs in 2026.

“We currently have seven dogs in our care, with five more arriving this week, and 13 dogs on our waiting list who will soon need our help,” Bollinger said. “None of this would be possible without our supporters. Every share, donation, adoption, foster, and kind word helps us save lives and keep moving forward. Thank you for being part of our shelter family and for giving these dogs the second chances they deserve.”
