PCHS invests in surgical video system

Perkins County Health Services works to provide their patients with the highest quality of care and best possible outcomes when undergoing surgery.

They recently invested in a surgical video system to be used in their minimally invasive surgical procedures. The system, 1588 AIM Platform by Stryker, is designed to reduce risk to patients by helping surgeons see and safeguard critical anatomy.

The 1588 AIM is the first minimally invasive video system to integrate five advanced imaging modalities for use across six surgical specialties: laparoscopy, arthroscopy, urology, gynecology, ear/nose/throat and gastrointestinal surgery.

The following imaging modalities are designed to enhance visualization of anatomy intra-operatively, thereby reducing risk to the patient during surgery:

• Infrared Illumination System (IRIS) is a visualization technology designed to reduce the risk of ureteral damage, which has a documented incidence rate of 0.3-1.8 percent in lower pelvic procedures.

• Endoscopic Near Infrared Visualization (ENV) is designed to reduce the risk of common bile duct injury during laparoscopic cholecystectomies by safeguarding critical anatomy and helping to reduce the risk of gastric, colorectal and esophageal anastomotic leaks.

• Clarity is a real-time video enhancement device designed to improve visualization of anatomy by enhancing tissue level detail and intra-body structures. This technology helps surgeons see through smoky and murky fluid, thereby improving image quality by up to 48 percent.

• Dynamic Range Enhancement (DRE) is designed to improve visualization in the surgical field by creating a brighter image in dark and posterior compartments.

• Desaturation decreases the saturation of color in the image, which is a preference that varies by surgeon and specialty.

“We are literally one of the first hospitals in the entire state of Nebraska to have Stryker’s Endoscopic Near Infrared Visualization imaging capability. This equipment is at the cutting edge of operative care for our surgical patients. Keeping our patients safe is, and always will be, our number one priority,” said Shane B. Banks, DO, FACS, Chief of Surgery at Perkins County Health Services.
